Mr. Darcy rode across Pemberley with Mr. Bingley. The man and his unmarried sister, Miss Bingley, had come to visit him for a time. Though he cared not for the machinations of Miss Bingley, Mr. Darcy enjoyed the presence of Mr. Bingley very much.

“You say Miss Bennet is here? In Derbyshire?” Mr. Bingley asked as they rode along the border of Mr. Darcy’s property.

“She came to tour Pemberley with her aunt and uncle the day before you arrived. I asked them to dinner tomorrow evening. I was certain you would like to see her again. Was I wrong?” Mr. Darcy slowed his horse and Mr. Bingley did likewise.

“You astonish me Darcy. At first, in Hertfordshire, you did not care for her and warned me away from giving a proposal. What has changed since that time?”

Mr. Darcy looked at his friend and gave a shrug of his shoulders. “I was wrong, Bingley. It is as simple as that. While I was in Kent at Easter visiting my aunt, I was made to know that Miss Bennet cared very deeply for you, that she still does.”

His friend was at a loss for words but the smile he wore spoke for him. Mr. Bingley’s laughter startled the horses. “Caroline will be sorely vexed when she learns of our dinner guests. Did Miss Elizabeth come with them? I recall how you commented upon her fine eyes in Hertfordshire.”

Mr. Darcy’s smile faltered. “She did not. It seems her presence was required in Brighton. Mr. Gardiner seemed particularly upset about it.”

“I wonder what errand she might have had in Brighton?” Bingley mused as they rode along.

“Mr. Wickham is in Brighton with his regiment. I cannot imagine she would go to see him. Not after the letter I wrote to her in Kent warning her of believing his lies.”

Mr. Bingley was surprised at this news. “Miss Elizabeth was in Kent at Easter? What other news have you been hiding Darcy?”

“I hide nothing, Bingley. You have only just arrived. There is none at Pemberley to speak to of my troubles. If you must know, I proposed to Miss Elizabeth and she refused me,” Mr. Darcy paused as his voice grew hoarse.

“You proposed to Miss Elizabeth? I cannot imagine why she would not accept. Are you certain you gave a proper proposal?” Mr. Bingley’s questions were plenty and he might have gone on had Mr. Darcy not held up a hand.

“Indeed I gave the most infuriating proposal a lady might ever be given. I insulted her, her family, and admitted to separating you and Miss Bennet. She had some peculiar affinity for Mr. Wickham and his plight as relayed by his forked tongue. I wrote a letter the night before I left Kent to explain why she ought to avoid him.” Mr. Darcy sighed deeply as they turned the horses back towards Pemberley.

“Chin up, Darcy. If I am able to persuade Miss Jane Bennet to become my wife, then you will be in proximity to Miss Elizabeth often enough to show her your charming side.
